Baldur's Gate App Reviews

Faithful Reproduction

This particular version of BG is an intriguing game to try out. I played the original version many years ago, and I can happily say that the improvements and tweaks made in the Enhanced Edition do improve the experience. Its a little expensive (hence 4 stars instead of 5), but it can easily provide you with hours of gameplay.

Baldurs Gate Enhanced

The update has serious issues fatal crashing when attempting to load previous versions saves. This is a HUGE problem.

New updates are great, but crashing!

I love this game, and the newest updates are noticeable and great! However, the game keeps crashing when I try to sleep at an inn. I just upgraded to Mavericks, not sure if that would have anything to do with the game’s compatibility somehow. It crashes just after the animated cutscene of the fire.

New version is much improved

Loads my old saved games just fine, no crashing. New interface is great, everything feels speedier, and it’s nice to zoom in and out. Game is a lot of fun, just as good as I remember it being.

Keeps Updating?

Every time I finish downloading the app, the App Store says “Update” instead of “Installed.” I don’t understand. I already have the lastest update.

App version Not Mod Compatible (or very unfriendly)

My only, but very serious, complaint: I could not make mods work with this verison of BG:EE. I spent 8+ hours working on it and reading forums. It appears that the file structure of the app version is not friendly with mods however (not in the least because of restricted permissions forcing manual overwrite of individual files). Unless you want to play on iPad I’d recommend getting a different version. Otherwise: Game seems like a very nice update. (I’ve mucked about the original and played BGTuTu using the GoG version). Character models and a number of other things are updated to look reasonable on a modern screen. A few new portraits. A few new classes. I never made it past the opening, but only encountered one obvious bug - Full Screen is sometimes too big for screen (using 15” Retina display laptop). - -Easily fixed by windowing and then full screening again.

Problems Saving - Cursor Disappearing

Defintely a faithful reproduction and a great experience when the game works as intended. However in my experience the cursor will disappear from time to time, making it impossible to navigate or play. Also I have had trouble saving progress. This incosistent saving behavior means that for me, hours of game play have been DELETED after hitting Quick Save - Yikes! The app continues to reinstall and when viewed in the App Store I see that there have been updates added. ( Each time its another 2.1 GB download) Obviously it is difficult to have an enjoyable gaming experience when this happens. Two stars because I remember its predessesor as a great game and am hopeful for a stable environment, but is currently "unplayable".

UPdate has a fatal flaw

I just updated the game and I had the unfortunate dis-pleasure of having my main character die. I can no longer re-load a recently saved game. When ever i attempt to re-load my main character shows up dead and I get a message that i need to re-start the game. This little cavaet did not exist in the orginal version. Vety disappointed!

Crashin’ like it’s 1998

After the extended delay is releasing this game, I really hoped the basics would be in working order. Looks great, is fun while it lasts. But crashing during cut scenes? Thats a 1998 experience I don’t look for or like to pay for in 2014. How will I know when what update fixes that? I shouldn’t have to QA this product that I paid for. And I don’t want to play it if I have to keep redoing things or save every 10 seconds. Other than that, it’s a great port. Guess I’ll sit around and wait till users confirm it’s mostly fixed (again). I’m not very picky, but it’s just not fun. It’s not like I paid for early access to a cutting edge game, this is a (extensive) port of a 15-year-old game. I still suspect delays blamed on other things were really because they found these bugs way too late and have been constantly trying to patch it. As an old school gamer/ hacker (and former CTO), I’ve seen it all before. How refreshing if they would just declare the obvious facts up front and mention the reality. Again, this is not a cutting-edge game. The people who want it are willing to help and support. If you are young and considering this game because of it’s legacy, I’d reconsider. If you loved the old PC version, it’s a surprisingly impressive (and certainly enhanced) edition. …between crashes.

One of my all-time favorites

BG is one of my all-time favorites, BG2 is the only one that surpasses it. I love it so much, I’ve gotten the Enhanced Edition for my Macbook Air and my iPad Mini, even though I still have the original PC CDs. I wish the cross platform cloud saves were already in place. Still, a superb game!

Great Game

If you liked the original game you will enjoy this one. I had forgotten how much I liked this game, really worth the price. You definately get your moneys worth!

Right click help

Can anyone explain to me how to write a scroll into my magic book on this version with out a right click mouse obviously? other than that the game seems very good. Just need to know how to write the scrolls into the mages books?

Table-top rules in real-time setting

I had really high hopes for a 30$ RPG game; compared to others i have played, this game seemed incredibly bogged down in details. I get that its an implementation of AD&D rules, and may serve to slake some nostalgia, but as a game this was just not an enjoyable experience.

Issues? Probably your Mac, not the app.

After reading several reviews complaining of bugs, crashes, and things like that, I was a little hesitant to re-purchase this majestic game which sucked up countless hours of my undergraduate self on my old Windows PC. But my nostalgia and insatiable desire to squander more hours got the best of me, and so there I was, typing my Apple ID passward to throw down a Jackson and dive back into the beautiful artificial world that is Baldur’s Gate. And that’s it. It’s done. I did everything there is to do, all over again, and I regret nothing. In fact, I’m downloading BGII right now, because that’s how far-gone I am. I also have a cold and have to stay in tonight, so it’s justifiable, right? Guys? After getting through the entire game, plus the expansion, with absolutely zero issues— and, in fact, some seriously improved performance— I have to conclude that, if you’re having issues with your game crashing, it’s your Mac, not the app. Do an SMC reset, clear out unneeded programs and files, reinstall OSX if you need to, but I encountered not a single problem with the operation of this beautiful game. It’s still one of the best games every made, it’s beautifully immersive and enjoyable, and it runs, for me, better than ever. Cheers.

Always a classic

Even over 15 years later, this game is still just as fun it ever was. The graphics of course are dated, but they still look nice, and there are noticeable improvements. There has been some issue as the game has crashed on me twice, however I did not lose significant data since my save files were fine. However, I do notice that every once in a while (not often) quicksave files can become corrupted, meaning it is probably safest to save with other files fairly often just in case, to avoid the pain of having to start over. I still prefer the second game, but this one is definitely still worth the money. I don’t regret a thing.

Great game. It’s worth it.

Yes, it’s a bit dated, but the game is still very playable and very fun. The storyline is fantastic. I played it very happily when it first came out years ago, and it’s nice to be able to do so again. I’m thinking the new generation will love it as much if they give it a chance.

Buggy

Don’t know if it’s just me, it seems more buggy in the 1.3 version, like two Rasaads, Nimbul doesn’t appear, enemies stuck in the ground in the middle of a battle… It a wonderful game, wish it has less bugs.

unplayable due to tooltip bug

This issue is for retina displays only I believe, but the text is too small to read and game cannot be enjoyed.

Bug for any Retina Mac user.

The game cannot be enjoyed due to the bug that affects gameplay in any Retina-based Mac (the mouse tooltip won’t get scaled as the rest of the game, making text almost impossible to read).

Old 1998 Classic of All Time

An RPG masterpiece, when it came out it was revolutionary. It was a great leap forward for games based on the AD&D concept and rules. One of the ebst games from 1998.
